South African National War Museum Publication No. 1

Publisher's hardcover with dust jacket.

xvi + 146pp. Illustrated. Four maps, three of which are loosely inserted in the rear pocket.

'In World War I several Units were formed of men who gladly volunteered to serve South Africa and the Commonwealth beyond the borders of the Union. They all played a noteworthy part on the fronts to which they were sent. The bare fact of their existence and composition are recorded in the cold vaults of the War Records Section but in only a few cases has an intimate history of any of those units appeared. Not least among such was the South African Field Artillery (S.A.F.A.) of which no full historical record has yet appeared.

Within a month of the end of the German South West Africa Campaign volunteers were called for to form the S.A.F.A. for "service overseas". The response was excellent and within the short space of four and a half months it left for the front fully equipped and efficiently trained.

The original members when volunteering for "service overseas" thought that that meant the Western Front and hoped and expected to be sent there. However, when the exigencies of the military situation demanded their services elsewhere they loyally responded.

This history records the worthy and useful part the S.A.F.A. played, first in the fever infested tropics of East Africa and then across the plains of Palestine from Gaza to beyond the Judean Hills to ultimate victory on the Plain of Sharon.'
