Three volume set bound in the original light blue buckram cloth covered boards with gilt titling on the spines. This set has a total of 39 full page colour plates and 1,235 black and white illustrations. Volume one has xvi prelims, 407 pages plus 23 index pages, followed by a fold out map. The second volume has 6 prelims and the pagination continues from the first volume to page 818, followed by a 23 page index and a double page coloured map. The third volume has 6 prelims and the pagination continues from the second volume to page 1,186 followed by the 23 page index. Errata slip loosely inserted in volume two.
CONDITION DETAILS: An above average set that has several signs of use: Although the bindings are still clean and tight the titles on the spines are faded. Two images are provided to show that the titles are visible in bright light and faint in shadow. The corners are bumped, leaving a crease on page corners. Although the foxing/spotting is largely restricted to the first and last few pages of each volume, it does occur sporadically and several plates have light abrasion marks where the plates stuck to the opposite text pages.
Volume one has some foxing/spotting on the end papers, the half title page, frontispiece, title page and the obverse of the map at the rear is browned.
Volume two has less foxing than volume one but page 464 and the plate opposite have some browning/ off-setting from a loose paper insert.
The third volume also has some foxing, mainly the first and last few pages.
