Professor H. B. Rycroft was the author of numerous books on South African botany and was Director of the National Botanic Gardens in Cape Town.

'Northern Rhodesia stands at the centre of the sub-continent of Southern Africa, near enough to the Kalahri Thirstland to use the extensions and retractions of the tell-tale sands as a basis of prehistoric chronology.

It lies on the Zambezi Valley which has cut down into fault-lines in the basalts and augments our knowledge of the vast periods of time involved.

In the skilled hands of the author Northern Rhodesia has been made to yield up its ancient story for the first time. This tale of human cultures in relation to time and to changing climates is fundamental to the study of the African field, whether past or present.

Based upon personal research and excavation under trying climatic conditions, no more authoritative study on the Prehistory of an African area could be imagined. Primitive arts, changing climates, the Pleistocene story of Africa, man's tools and environment, a new assessment of Homo rhodesiensis in relation to the human story and the prehistoric fauna of Ancient Africa are all reviewed and placed in proper perspective.

The South African Archaeological Society is proud to present this first volume in a monograph Series to the academic and scientific world.' - editor's note
