A finely rebound copy, in olive green half-leather and marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers, of the scarce first edition of this title, THE South African literary highspot of all time. Two Vols. Chapman and Hall, 1883. Top edges gilt. The spine of each volume has five raised bands with the six compartments elaborately decorated in gilt. Supposedly one of only 300 copies, many of which went to libraries. With a superb provenance – from the library of landlord, Sir Lionel Phillips, with his ex-libris on both front pastedowns. The attractive bindings are in very good plus condition and apart from some light foxing of the prelims (not present in the text), both volumes are clean and unmarked. A lovely set.
