Early in February 1820 the author (aged twenty-one) and his wife and child embarked on the Aurora, being attached to "Sephton's Party" of the Albany settlers, and the volume contains an account of the early days of the Eastern province, and of the progress of the 1820 settlers, together with some particulars of their grievances and disasters, and some references to the misunderstandings which arose between the Wesleyan missionaries and Dr. Philip. Considerable information is afforded respecting Kaffraria and the border settlements, also an account of the Fingos, notes on the Bechuana country, Natal, the superstitions of the various native races, together with a comprehensive history of the progress of the missionary institutions of South-East Africa.
