Mr. Roberts put down the first borehole in the Orange Free State in 1932. When the borehole reached a depth 4046 feet, a number of gold reefs were intersected, including the Gold Estate Reef. A second borehole led to the discovery of another payable reef, the Basal Reef, which was at a shallower depth.
