A propaganda leaflet for the Federated Trades Union, giving a brief account of the Witwatersrand strike of 1913.
A general industrial strike was initiated on 3 July, 1913, after mining bosses decided to extend working hours to Saturday afternoons - a time, the author claims, that was sacred to all workers as it afforded them the opportunity to do the things that they otherwise would not have been able to do during the week. After a few windows were smashed and properties damaged the author goes on to say that..'fresh fields were sought, what more natural that the cry of "Star Office," should be raised; the offices of a paper that had constantly derided the workers, never missing a chance to uphold the wonderful fairness of the mine magnates, thus earning their subsidy. The response was eager, a rush was made to the offices of the "Star"; Windows were quickly demolished, and attempts made to fire the huge pile that constituted the works. It withstood the onslaught; An easier task was undertaken by veering round the corner and attacking the Stationery and Editorial Departments. Not being of such a solid nature as the works, they quickly caved in, the crowd humorously yelling "Star Final!" around the devastating flames.'
The pamphlet also contains a list of the Killed and Wounded and a few black & white photographs at the rear.
An extremely scarce pamphlet indeed. SABIB recorded only two copies.
