31 pages, original printed brown card wrappers, foxing on covers and a water stain throughout the book, housed in a blue cloth solander box, titled in gilt.
In the preface Bowler explains that his aim is ‘to supply his pupils studying Art under the system of HARDING with fuller instructions in the drawing of Foliage, Foreground, etc….’ He emphasises that ‘this hand-book possesses little claim to originality.’ Most of the preface is a defence of ‘the system introduced by me into the colony, against the attacks made upon it from ignorant or selfish motives’, i.e. Harding’s system of art instruction. (see Bradlow (Frank R.) Thomas Bowler His Life and Work, Balkema, Cape Town 1967, page 76 ff.)
There is an advertisement on the back cover for Bowler’s Panorama or Cape Town and Surrounding Scenery. This fine print was first issued three years before the handbook in 1854.
Only 4 copies listed in A SOUTH AFRICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY Volume 1, page 266.
Book plate of Edna and Frank Bradlow on inside of solander box.
