How it works

Limited Edition: 185 pages, bound in white parchment boards with vellum back, pictorial stamping on the cover and spine in gold lettering, top edge gilt, twenty-one full page illustrations in colour, mounted on white paper and twenty five drawings in black and white. There is an extra coloured plate in this edition which is not in the trade edition – ‘Sea-Nymphs hourly ring his knell: Ding-dong’. Book plate on the second free endpaper, corners lightly bumped, a very good copy in the dust jacket which is frayed, split along the spine and with a minor tape repair and is now preserved in a Brodart protector, but without the publisher’s cardboard slip case.

The colophon reads, This Edition is limited to 520 copies, numbered and signed by the Artist. Of these, Nos.1 to 260 are for sale in Great Britain and Ireland, and Nos. 261 to 520 in the UnitedStates of America.

Arthur Rackham

Latimor (Sarah Briggs) & Haskell (Grace Clark) Arthur Rackham, A Bibliography, (1936, reprinted  Florida 1971), pages 61/62.

Gettings (Fred)  Arthur Rackham, Studio Vista, London, reprinted 1976, page 143, ‘Rackham’s two great books of the twenties were James Stephens’ Irish Fairy Tales of 1920, and Shakespeare’s The Tempest of 1926, both of which exhibit the general softening of style, as well as the results of an obvious urge within Rackham to discover new forms of expression.
