78 pages: chiefly illustrations, portraits, maps. Small oblong quarto. Stiff pictorial paper wraps.
One of the scarcer Goldblatt titles, published to accompany a travelling exhibition opening at Aperture's Burden Gallery, New York City.
A photographic essay of the commuters of Kwandebele, an apartheid "dumping ground" more than 120 km north of the Witwatersrand. People were moved there to live in a "Homeland" and thus did not qualify for South African citizenship. Goldblatt and Joseph Lelyveld travelled on the bus for the three hour journey that the workers had to endure each day to get to their places of work. Lelyveld recorded his experiences in MOVE YOUR SHADOW.
