A good, solid copy of the 1919 first edition. Preface:\"In \'The First Annexation of the Transvaal\' the relations of the Boers and the British Government were reviewed from the first settlements in South Africa to the London Convention of 1884. The origin of the Boer people was traced; their early sufferings under British rule; their trek to an unknown Land of Promise; and their struggle for independence, culminating in the Conventions of 1852 and 1854. We saw too how the Orange Free State was deprived of the Diamond Fields, and we followed the development of the Transvaal State, its overthrows in 1877 and the means by which the Boers, biding their time and rejecting such opportunities as the Zulu War, at last regained, in part at least, the independence which had been filched from them... the Republic was gradually enircled by a barrier of British territory which effectively deprived it of all opportunity of outward expansion;... its internal development was impeded by a consistent policy of admonitions, humiliations, instructions, and warnings, followed by threats and demands,...\" In 4 Parts; Zululand and the New Republic, Bechuanaland and the Road to the North, Swazieland and the Harbour, and Matabeleland, Mashonaland, and the British South Africa Company; including choronological table from 1833 The First Trek, to 1899 The War, Book condition: boards and spine very good, gilt spine title, end-papers good (owner inscription), binding very good, page edges and end-papers foxed and spotted, some foxing to text, otherwise a very handsome copy. This book constitutes a remarkable chronological record of the history of the Boer nation and its struggle in the face of British Imperialism, and includes many documents, either quoted in full or in part, such as: Treaty between the Boers and the Zulus, Dinizulu\'s Proclamation, Proclamations of the Govt. of the new Republic, Proclamation of May 11, 1887, declaring Zululand a British Possession, Treaties, Notices, Instructions, Contracts, Conventions, Concessions, etc... plus Appendices A to T documenting letters, extracts from private correspondence, contracts, articles, treaties, charters, etc..etc...total 603pp. plus fold-out maps at end.
