Dinuzulu succeeded his father Cetshwayo as king of the Zulus in 1884. He remained king until his death in 1913. Accused of giving orders to Bambatha, a Zulu chief, to start a rebellion against the British government in Natal, he was put on trial for high treason. After General Louis Botha became Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa in 1910, he ordered that his old friend Dinuzulu be released from prison. They had known each other since 1884 when Dinuzulu asked the Boers for help in a battle of succession against Usibhepu, a relative of king Cetshwayo.
In 1890 Dinuzulu was captured by the British and exiled to the island of St. Helena for seven years. On the island he received tutorship from Magema Fuze, a former student of Bishop Colenso and also the first black printer in South Africa.
