How it works

Register

Hammond was an American in charge of Rhodes' mining operations in South Africa and played an integral role in the Jameson Raid. He was arrested by the Boers after its' failure and was sentenced to be hanged with the other leading figures in the raid. This was eventually commuted to 15 years imprisonment and finally withdrawn on payment of a large fine. He returned to the US where he was a friend of President William Taft and played an imporatant role in Republican politics and was a one-time vice presidential canditate. He also befriended several other US presidents including Theodore Rooseveldt.

This copy is in fine condition in dw. and has a wonderful inscription by the author: "To his Excellency/Hon.Samuel W McCall/ Complements of / John Hays Hammond/ 'I was for hanging you until/ I heard your story and now/ I am here to honor you'/ Thomas B Reed,/ Statement of 'Tom' Reed at a banquet/ given me on my return from Africa/ JHH." Thomas Brackett Reed (October 18, 1839 – December 7, 1902), occasionally ridiculed as Czar Reed, was a U.S. Representative from Maine, and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1889–1891 and also from 1895–1899. He was a powerful leader of the Republican Party, and during his tenure as Speaker of the House, he served with greater influence than any Speaker who came before, and he forever increased its power and influence for those who succeeded him in the position. Samuel Walker McCall (February 28, 1851 – November 4, 1923) was a member of the United States House of Representatives, and the 47th Governor of Massachusetts. This makes this a remarkable association copy between three major US politicians.

50pp. Original blue boards with printed labels in a near fine dw. which has a 3x2mm. chip of the rear fold. Uncommon in this condition even uninscribed. Part of the statement on the front panel of the dw. reads: "The passage of time so far from detracting from the interest of this story serves rather to enhance it, for the author, through his intimate knowledge of the circumstances, is able to disclose the connection of the Jameson Raid and the Boer War with Germany's plan to found a world-domination on the ruins of Democracy".
