Hammond was an American in charge of Rhodes' mining operations in South Africa and played an integral role in the Jameson Raid. He was arrested by the Boers after its' failure and was sentenced to be hanged with the other leading figures in the raid. This was eventually commuted to 15 years imprisonment and finally withdrawn on payment of a large fine. He returned to the US where he was a friend of President William Taft and played an imporatant role in Republican politics and was a one-time vice presidential canditate. He also befriended several other US presidents including Theodore Rooseveldt. This copy is inscribed by Hammond to Henry Cabot Lodge, also a notable US politician, who amongst many other credits, served as Republican leader in the US senate. This is thus a remarkably important association copy. From the library of Henry Cabot Lodge with his bookplate on the front pastedown. A near fine copy in the original blue paper covered boards lacking the dw.
