All 50 books in Very Good condition, in uniform pale grey cloth-covered boards, with some browning of the endpapers. The two additional books, see description below, show some wear and foxing, particularly the Maskew Miller book which is rough cut on the front edge. This complete set has been collected from many sources and some of the books have the names of previous owners on the endpapers, among them Patrick Duncan and C. Graham Botha.
The map intended to face page one was left out of Volume 50 when the book was produced. The map was later sent to VRS members for inclusion in the volume and is present in this volume.
There are three variants of Volume 2, Life at the Cape in the Mid-Eighteenth Century, being the biography of Rudolf Siegfried Allemann, by O.F. Mentzel, originally published in 1784,
The three variants in 1919-1920 came about because the then secretary of the Van Riebeeck Society, A.C.G. Lloyd, sold the text to two publishers in Cape Town: Darter Brothers and T. Maskew Miller. The VRS 1919 version is bound in the standard pale grey covers. The Maskew Miller edition (1920) is bound in brown, cloth-covered boards with R.S Allemann's crest and name in gilt on the front and a paste-on label on the spine. The Darter edition (1920) is bound in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. The Darter edition has, handwritten on the front free endpaper, an explanation dated 1967, by Miss Kathleen Jeffereys, acting as secretary of the VRS at the time, to explain why there are three variants of Volume 2.
The Van Riebeeck Society prints, or re-prints, rare and valuable books relating to the history of South Africa.
Various maps and illustrations, present in all books and all in good condition.
