2 volumes: I. 192pages. II. 169 pages, colour frontispiece in each volume and 8 colour plates, full page and other sketches in the text, map on front endpapers of volume I, white cloth spines with gilt decoration and titling, blue cloth sides, fore-edges uncut, contained in a blue cloth slip case. The top corners of both volumes are bumped and the slip case worn with the corners bumped. Contents fine. 

The colophon reads: 

THE VOYAGE OF THE CHALLENGER has been printed and illustrated with reproductions from the original manuscript Journals in the possession of the author’s widow, by Christopher and Anthony Stanford and Owen Rutter at the Golden Cockerel Press, Rolls Passage, London, and completed on the 31st Day of May, 1938. The Edition is limited to 300 sets of the 2 volumes printed in Eric Gill’s Perpetua type on Van Gelder paper.

Pages 97 to 120 in volume I include an account for Swire’s stay at the Cape from 19th November to 21st December 1873 including journeys to Wellington and Tulbagh.
