First Edition. 1846 - 1975. This copy with the 37 full page bird plates brilliantly hand-coloured. Finely bound in modern half-leather and buckram. 38pp. text and 37pp. plates. The section by Gray was first published in 3 parts in 1844/1845 and included 22 plates. The volume remained unfinished until 1875 when Bowdler-Sharpe edited the work, added an appendix and the remaininbg 15 plates. There were also two further volumes relating to this expedition published on Mammals, Reptiles, Fishes, Crustacea, Insects and Mollusca. However, this one on the Birds would appear to be the most sought after, particulary this scarcer version with the magnificent plates hand-coloured. The current copy is in very good plus condition. It has some foxing of the last 7-8 pages of the text, but the plates are generally very clean with an occasional spot of light foxing. A major early ornithological work.
