De Luxe Edition in black full leather binding with gilt titles on spine.

166 pages of photographs; mostly full-page and 20 in colour; with accompanying text.

Number 9 of the Special Collector's Edition limited to 50 copies, signed by the authors.

Binding solid. Internally clean with original bookseller's ticket on front paste down. A very good copy.

'The British Prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli, commenting on the Zulu nearly one hundred years ago, said: A remarkable people, the Zulu. They defeat our generals, convert our Bishops and put an end to a great European Dynasty.

He was describing a primitive African clan who had not yet discovered the wheel; who were dressed in skins and whose only weapons were rawhide shields and hand forged spears. Yet they had emerged from obscurity to inflict the worst defeat that a modern army has ever suffered by men without arms.

The customs and traditions of these warrior people of yesteryear have been preserved in an unwritten culture passed down through centuries of turbulent Zulu history.

Alice Mertens and Hilgard Schoeman spent many days in the kraals and often remote districts of Kwa Zulu capturing in both photographs and words something of these customs as a record for the future when alien influences will have swept away much of the historic social order of the Zulu people.'

The very scarce de luxe edition as only 50 copies were issued.
