Theocritus, (born c. 300 BC, Syracuse, Sicily [Italy]—died after 260 BC), Greek poet, the creator of pastoral poetry. His poems were termed eidyllia (“idylls”), a diminutive of eidos, which may mean “little poems.” There are no certain facts as to Theocritus’s life beyond those supplied by the idylls themselves. Certainly he lived in Sicily and at various times in Cos and Alexandria and perhaps in Rhodes. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Theocritus
