First edition. 388 pages, frontispiece, 13 full page black and white plates, numerous other black and white illustrations, 2 folding maps, 4 charts, green cloth with gilt vignette of a giant sable's head on the upper cover, titled and decorative gilt on the spine, a very good copy.

Czech (Kenneth) Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 -1999, page264: Statham trekked throughout Angola observing the landscape and peoples, but was particularly interested in stalking giant sable, of which he collected several world-class trophies near the Loando River. There are also episodes of hunting lion and leopard. Of additional interest are the reproductions of wild game spoor superimposed over the text describing the wildlife of the region.

Colonel C J B Statham (archaeologist; military/naval; British; Male; 7 Nov 1872 - 29 Apr 1933) Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps who was born in Agra, India on the 7th November 1872 and died in Raigarh, India on 29th April 1933. He was educated at Guy's Hospital, the London University and Cambridge University before entering the R.A.M.C. as surgeon lieutenant in 1896. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1915 and to colonel in 1917, before retiring in 1921.

Statham served in the campaign on the North-West Frontier of lndia in 1897-8, receiving the Frontier medal, and in West Africa during the First World War, when he was mentioned in dispatches and received the C.M.G. for bravery in tending wounded soldiers under heavy fire. Subsequently he served as administrative medical officer with the Serbian Army. After the war he received the C.B.E., the Legion of Honour, the Croix de Guerre, the Order of St. Saba of Serbia, and the Italian silver medal for public health.

During his retirement Statham devoted himself to travel in Africa and Asia and is the author of "Through Angola", 1922; "With My Wife Across Africa by Canoe and Caravan," 1924; and "The Romance of a Tudor House," 1929.
