The Rand, at the last moment, threw off the throttling grip on its life. Its people had been inured to a deadly encroachment on its liberties by a succession of acts from one insidious menace to one more open in its declared arrogance; from one brutality that might have been an experiment in lawless levity to others that were evidence of a ferocious temper slavering for yet more helpless victims. These experiments in tyranny that grew bolder with every snatch at power that succeeded, with every act of violence that went unpunished, gradually sapped that spirit of combination for protection which animates even a herd of cattle when threatened by wild dogs. The people became unconscious of the real menace. They came to regard each blow to their liberties as something that had to be borne in patience for a short time until affairs resumed their normal course.

A day by day account of events.

Original illustrated landscape stapled paper wrap, with folding map and panarama view with approx 58 authentic photographs of this crisis in 1922. Crease to front cover, some external rubbing. The photographs are tightly bound, crisp and reflect the mood of the time. Very clean copy.

Three postcards:- Two mint postcards 'The Great Strike on the Rand', Showing Dead Horses outside Corner House, and, 'The Luggage and Booking Offices at Park Station which the mob set fire to.'

A third used postcard with commentary relevant to actual events- An Incident of the strike. "Come on, Shoot me!" Card in very good condition.
