The expedition explored the unknown territory between Somaliland
and Lake Rudolf. 'At the time it was the universal opinion that it would be
impossible to enter the Galla countries, let alone reach Lake Rudolf, with less
than two or three hundred well-drilled followers.'
Smith hunted elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, and other wild game, and made
important natural history collections, discovering many new species of birds,
reptiles, plants.
"A noted explorer, naturalist, and game shot, Smith and his party explored the then
unknown region between Somaliland and Lake Rudolph. Starting from Berbera, they
traveled through the Ogaden where lions were bagged. Near the River Erer,
rhinoceros, lion, and leopard were hunted. Traveling toward the Shebbeli River,
kudu and lion were collected, while near the Galana Amara, the party bagged
additional elephant and rhino. As they approached Lake Rudolph, buffalo,
waterbuck, and hippopotamus were hunted, with elephant taken near Teleki
volcano. A handsome book with considerable hunting content.
