Translated from the German of Edward Mohr by N. D’Anvers.

With numerous full page woodcut illustrations, four chromo-lithographs and a map.

First edition: xiv + 462 pages, frontispiece portrait, folding map, 4 chromolithographs – the encampment at Potchefstroom bound in on page 96, including a fine view of Victoria Falls (page 323), 11 full-page wood engraved plates, top edge gilt, starting to wear at the front hinge, book plates on the front end papers rebound in red leather with pictorial gilt and an armorial crest on the upper cover, titled gilt on the spine, frayed along the edges, a good copy.

Czech (Dr Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785-1999, page 198, ‘A German sportsman, Mohr travelled to the Victoria Falls “partly for the sake of hunting, partly in the hope of making geographical discoveries.” After landing at Cape Town, he and his companions ventured into the interior, crossing the Tugela River and enjoying a wide variety of sport. Eland, buffalo, black rhinoceros and kudu were bagged. Near the Matopo Mountains, they hunted eland and wildebeest with Dreyse needle-guns, an early form of breech loader that would achieve great fame in the Franco-Prussian War which was being waged during Mohr’s expedition. Marching from Tati to the Zambesi, lion and elephant were collected, with additional rhino and buffalo taken near the falls. An excellent work of exploration and sport,'
