How it works

Register

25 stiff card leaves with mounted silver gelatin photographs – 152 in all each neatly captioned in ink, mostly 112 x 95 mm.

The tour follows a common route for tourists visiting Southern Africa in the years after the Anglo-Boer War 1899 – 1902 via Teneriffe, Las Palmas, Cape Town, Durban, Mount Edgecombe, Henley, Colenso, Ladysmith (Wagon Hill), Johannesburg, Pretoria, Modder River, Bloemfontein to Kimberley, The Matopo Hills, Victoria Falls, Umtali, Mozambique, Mombasa, Egypt and On the Way Home on board the Durham Castle.

No clues as to the identity of the travellers are offered. Several photographs show three men and three women. The final photographs on board the Durham Castle show men and women playing deck sports. A final photograph shows the group disembarking with cabin trunks and boxes one of which bears the name Miss Mary Harvey painted on the end.

The Durham Castle was built for the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company in 1904. She served  on the company’s East Africa service and was sunk by enemy action in January 1940 after being requisitioned by the Admiralty for use as a store ship.

Bound in red faux morocco with gilt titling and borders, all edges gilt. Some wear at the top and bottom of the spine and at the corners.
