417 + 32 pages of publisher's catalogue (dated May 1878), frontispiece, portrait of Captain Elton, 10 plates, 33 illustrations in the text, 3 folding maps, light foxing, ex subscription library label and another book plate on the front paste down end paper, brown pictorial cloth gilt, uncut edges, spine is faded and starting to split, a good copy.

Czech (Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of Big Game Hunting Books 1785 - 1999 page 91-92: 'The British consul to Mozambique, Elton spent considerable time fighting the slave trade in the region. He explored the region around Lake Nyassa and enjoyed considerable sport after elephant, hippopotamus, impala, eland, black rhinoceros and buffalo. His descriptions of hunting with his two rifles, "Big Henry" and "Little Henry," are particularly vivid. During his return to the coast, he contracted fever and died. His journals were arranged, edited and completed by his hunting companion, H.B. Cotterill'.
