First English edition: 2 volumes: xxiii, [1 – directions for placing the plates] 442 + 464 pages, engraved frontispiece in each volume, 10 engraved plates - 2 folding, half title in each volume, full mottled calf with red title labels gilt on spines, which are faded, volume 1 has been rebacked and has a split in the leather down the spine, volume 2 has been simply repaired at the top and the bottom of the spine, light foxing throughout, a good set.

Ogilvie (J.H.) A Bibliography of Le Vaillant’s Voyages and Oiseaux D’Afrique, (1962), number 22: In volume 2 page 50 the plate is substantially the same as the so-called 'supressed plate', except that the woman's peculiar conformation has been masked by an apron and several strings of beads round her waist.
A South African Bibliography, Volume 3, page 102, ‘The frontispiece in volume 1 Dangerous attack of a tyger is an extra plate and is only found in the Lane edition. This edition also does not replace the Hottentot woman as stated by Mendelssohn's Bibliography volume 1 page 890.’
