Campbell’s first journey. First edition:  xv + 582 pages, frontispiece portrait of the author, colour folding map with the author’s route marked in red, 8 plates – 1 double page and others with more than one illustration on the plate, half black calf and marbled paper sides – the leather and paper are worn along the edges, sprinkled page edges, contents crisp, a good copy.

Kennedy (R.F.) Africana Respository, (1965), pages 98 – 103, ‘…My next (missionary) is John Campbell, philanthropist and traveller, the little man with the umbrella. He was born in Edinburgh in 1766, and at school was a classmate of Sir Walter Scott. He became a business man, a founder of the Religious Tract Society of Scotland, a founder of Sunday schools, a lay preacher, and after moving to London, was ordained in 1802. The London Missionary Society invited him to inspect their missions in South Africa and he made two journeys, one from 1812 to 1814, and the other 1819 to 1821.
