Henry Lichtenstein, "Doctor in medicine and philosophy, and professor of natural history in the University of Berlin, member of several learned societies, and formerly in the the Dutch service at the Cape of Good Hope" [title page] managed to travel extensively in the four years he spent at the Cape, and his observations are free of much of the prejudice which coloured many of his contemporaries' writings.
