The author was a respected professor of natural sciences from the University of Berlin. He accepted the position as a doctor and accompanied the new British Governor, General Janssens, on a tour of the Cape, starting in Kaffraria and then swinging across the Karoo and the northern Cape back to Cape Town. His descriptions of the animals and natural features of the country, as well as the native tribes encountered, particularly the Bechuanas, are extremely informative and remain a trustworthy classic of early travel and conditions in the interior.
