First edition of this classic of early African travel in contemporary full leather binding. xxvii, 372, xcii, [6] pp. Illustrated with an engraved portait of the author, 5 engraved plates, 3 folding maps and 2 engraved leaves of music. The gilt decorated binding is fairly heavily worn, down to the boards in some parts, with some loss. The outer joints are cracked and have been reinforced and the volume handles firmly. The marbled endpapers are intact although the front hinge is starting. Fore and lower edges marbled. Internally the book is fairly clean. There is virtually no foxing but some occasional browning of pages and light offsetting. The engravings are clean. The two large folding maps are in nice clean state, but each has a single 3-4cm. tear at the inner attachment to the book. The smaller folding map of Africa is intact.
