When originally published in 1868 large sections of the manuscripts were omitted. This edition (Tabler) is based on all the original manuscripts and includes the previously omitted epic journey to the Zambezi in company with Thomas Baines from 1860-1863. Like Livingstone, Chapman had an ambition to develop the Zambezi as a trade route. Pages: Part 1 [i-viii]ix-xiii[xiv]pp1-258. Part 2 [i-viii]ix-xiii[xiv] pp1-244[245]. Both volumes are profusely illustrated with line engravings by Chapman and Baines reproduced from the original edition of the books. They give a contemporary pictorial record of the expeditions. Fold-out map of the route from Walvis Bay to the Victoria Falls on Page 2 of Vol.1. Seven photographs, tken and developed by Chapman on the Zambezi expedition have been included between pp 10 and 11 of Vol. 2. Brown paper-covered boards with rexine spines. Gilt design on front covers and gilt titles on spines. Cream-coloured dust jackets illustrated on front, and with Balkema advertisements on backs. Some insect damage to lower corners and edges, and on spine of the dust jackets. Otherwise both volumes are in near Fine condition.
