Two volume set. The text was taken from original manuscript material, some of which was left out of the 1868 edition and previously unpublished. Some of the illustrations are from "Explorations in South West Africa" (1864) by Thomas Baines, others from Chapman's 1868 edition of "Travels in the Interior of South Africa", the frontis portrait is from the Africana Museum and volume 2 contains 7 reproductions of photographs taken by James Chapman during his expedition to the Zambezi with Thomas Baines.
These two volumes are the 10th title in the South African Bibliographical and Historical Studies Series.
Original dust jackets. Original brown leather-like spines with titling and paper covered boards. Both volumes are profusely illustrated in black and white. Volume one has xiii prelims, 258 pages, a large fold out map and volume two has xiii prelims, 244 pages, followed by the publisher's list of publications in this series.
CONDITION DETAILS: The dust jackets have minor creases and there is a small brown mark at the top of the first volume's spine. There were plastic covers over the dust jackets, which kept them clean and bright, but the tape used left some residue marks on the first and last few pages of both volumes. There is a bookseller's label on the front paste down of volume one.
