These two volumes contain the journal of Burchell's travels in Southern Africa from 1811 to 1815. His work as a naturalist and collector is highly regarded but equally important is his observation and description of the various peoples inhabiting the country. A number of plants, birds and mammals were named for him. For example, Burchell's zebra and Burchell's coucal.
