Volume One only of the 2nd. and best edition (1806) of this early classic work of Southern Africana (the first edition was published in 1801 and 1804). This edition is most prized for the eight wonderful hand coloured aquatints by Samuel Daniell, not present in the first edition, and all of which are contained in this first volume, making it most desirable, even as an odd volume.
xvi pp. preface and 427pp. text, in a contemporary full calf binding with six decorated compartments on the spine and two gilt titled leather labels. The binding has moderate edge wear with rubbing and some loss and there is some cracking of the internal hinges. However the volume is solid and tight. Internally the book is very clean. There is occasional fairly minor foxing and some of the plates have offset lightly on to the adjacent pages. The plates themselves are all about fine and unfoxed. The fep. bears a contemporary ex libris, and there is moderate offsetting on both front and rear endpapers.
