Trek magazine was a bi-monthly literary review with left-liberal inclination. In 1947 Trek merged with The South African Opinion after the latter was forced to close down for financial reasons. The two magazines would have a significant impact on SA's literary life as it gave many young writers a platform; The South African Opinion cemented Herman Charles Bosman's status as one of SA's foremost short-story writers and Trek contained some of the earliest prose by two Nobel Prize-Winning authors.

Some contributions include:

Pretty Puss by Doris Lessing, March 1950. Treasures of the Sea by Nadine Gordimer, June 1950. A Road to the Big City by Doris Lessing, July 1950. A Fairy Godfather by Lionel Abrahams, The Grievance by Roy MacNab, Family Gathering by Pierre Bosman (brother of Herman Charles). Other contributors were Sarah Gertrude Millin, Edgar Bernstein, Bernard Sachs, G. A. Watermeyer.

Eli Weinberg - who produced the famous photo of Herman Charles Bosman - contibuted many of the cover photographs, which include: Basuto Chief (Feb., 1951), The Tug (Jan., 1951), Malay Fishermen (July, 1950), Winter Sunset (May, 1950), Malay Fishermen bring the "General Smuts" to the Shore (March, 1950).
