Rare First Edition, Hardcover Octavo bound in green cloth boards with 264 uncut pages, top edge gilt.
Gilt titles to the spine, head and heal bumped with rubbing on the corners, also has marks on the front/back boards. 24-page publisher's catalogue at rear dated 1897, frontispiece with tissue guard (torn at the bottom).
The gruesome frontispiece photograph shows a lynching and was suppressed in later editions. A novel written in protest at the actions of the early settlers in Rhodesia.
Previous owners pencil inscriptions on the front pastedown, and in pen on the half title page. Overall, the binding is fair and the book is in good condition.
