As a lifelong (more than 40 years)scholar of fly-fishing and avid collector of South African fly-fishing literature, I have over the years managed to lay my hands on nearly all the scarce Southern African fly-fishing literature classics (a few times over) at one time or another. However, one little book that has forever eluded me, is this little book; \'Trout Fishing in South Africa\' by S.A. Hey. Written in a time when there were but a handful of fly-fisherman in South Africa, this is one of the earliest introductory books on the subject ever published. With it\'s introductory paragraphs to all the known trout streams in South Africa at the time, the booklet would have been a much thumbed over reference for any aspiring fly-fisherman of the day. Today hardly more than a handful of these delightful little books remain.

\"Sydney Hey, a postmaster in his professional life, spent his free time angling in the rivers and fresh-water streams, and gathering material for his now classic work, The Rapture of the River. When The Rapture of the River was first published in 1957, the first and only edition sold out within days and soon became South Africa’s most in-demand fly fishing book ever – attaining ‘classic’ status within a couple of years. Today the book is much sought-after.\"

\"Though he had no formal scientific training, Sidney Hey made huge contributions to the advancement of conservation. In many ways he was from the same mould as AC Harrison, a typewriter repairman and secretary of the Cape Piscatorial Society, who was awarded an honourary MSc from the University of Cape Town for his prodigious contributions to aquatic biology. Hey not only contributed greatly to the development of fly fishing as a tourist resource in South Africa, but he was also a tireless campaigner for sound management and conservation practices and is credited with the discovery of a species of dragonfly new to science. His son, Dr Douglas Hey, no doubt influenced by his father, went on to become one South Africa’s leading conservationists.\"
