"TURNING AND MECHANICAL MANIPULATION. Intended as a Work of General Reference and Practical Instruction, on the Lathe, and the various Mechanical Pursuits followed by Amateurs."

The complete set of five volumes that were published over a period of forty-one years. Vols. I-III being written by Charles Holtzapffel, and the latter two volumes being completed by his son, John Jacob Holtzapffel, thirty years later. These five volume together present a universe of Victorian technical art and is considered to be the greatest work in English on the lathe and its accessories. Complete first edition sets are quite scarce.

Matching contemporary three-quarter leather bindings with marbled sides.

VOLUME I: Materials; their Differences, Choice, and Preparation; various Modes of working them, generally without Cutting Tools. Illustrated by upwards of Three Hundred Woodcuts. Published for the author by Holtzapffel & Co., London, 1843.

Gift inscription on front paste down, "Bequeathed to Lewis Evans by the Revd. Astley Roberts late Vicar of Croxley Green 1906." (For a short bio and photo of Revd. Astley Roberts please visit: https://www.croxleygreenhistory.co.uk/reverend_astley_roberts.html) Lewis Evans appears to have been involved in some way with the paper manufacturing industry at the Croxley Mills and published a lecture on ancient paper-making in 1896.

VOLUME II: The Principles of Construction, Action, and Application, of Cutting Tools used by Hand; and also of Machines derived from the Hand Tools. Illustrated by upwards of Seven Hundred Woodcuts. Title page indicates date as 1856 although preface dated 1846.
