First edition of Cloete's best selling first book, a novel of The Great Trek. It sold over two million copies and was originally banned in South Africa.

A most important association copy inscribed by Cloete on the verso of the half-title to the publisher William Collins and dated October 1937. The William Collins in question would seem to be the fourth Chairman of the company Collins to hold this post. The company William Collins and Co. was founded by the first William Collins (1789-1853) in 1819. The name was subsequently changed to William Collins and Sons & Co.

In the original brown cloth with a sunned spine. There is mild to moderate foxing internally most marked on the prelims ow. a good copy. Lacking the dw.
