'The author, in the capacity of a war correspondent of the Daily Mail and the Sphere, was present at the battle of Pieter's Hill and the relief of Ladysmith. Later on he made his way through Basutoland, and crossed the Boer lines near Thaba' Nchu, but was taken prisoner at Dewetsdorp, and escaping, was recaptured at Reddersburg, and imprisoned for nine weeks at Pretoria. He gives his impressions of three Boer prisons, and a very graphic account of the state of the capital of the Transvaal during the last days of Boer Government before the British occupation. - Mendelssohn Vol. II, pages 253-54.
