Denis Godfrey's book " The Enchanted Garden", and a photograph of my grandmother, left me by an uncle, made me realise how little I knew of my family, not just the present generation but grandparents and great grandparents. I started delving along the lines suggested by Denis Godfrey- visiting elderly relatives, asking them questions and getting them to tell me tales of pioneering times in Rhodesia and South Africa. I found that they only too willingly to allow me to borrow diaries and old photographs.

I discovered that my grandfather, West White Fynn, had been the son of William McDowell Fynn, who with his brother Henry Francis Fynn, were among the first white settlers in Natal.

Through the Archives in Salisbury I obtained a copy of the Diary of the Southey-Peacocke Trek from Rustenberg to Salisbury in 1896- parts of which I have included in this book. My mother was a young girl of fourteen and was a member of the party on the trek and was mentioned many times as Miss L.Southey (one of the Mashonaland nightingales).

My researches over the past eight years made me realise that so many descendents of the 1820 settlers were related or connected to my family, my father being Fynn and my mother Southey, and amongst these families were Hooles, Dicks, Rubidges, McDonalds, Wests and many others. This book may be of interest to members of the vast families now spread out through South Africa and Rhodesia.

The family genealogical tables included in this book detail the way these families have become interconnected and I have endeavoured to bring these up to date through the help of many of the present generation.
