Stephanus Hofmeyr was born in Cape Town in 1839. In 1863 he completed his exams in Theological Instruction in Stellenbosch. In the same year the foreign mission society of the Dutch Reformed Church requested that he would assist Rev. Alexander MacKidd in Soutpansberg, Transvaal. Hofmeyr reached the mission station on 6.2.1865, three months before the death of Rev. MacKidd. He proved very capable of managing the mission station by himself. Hofmeyr was the Dutch Reformed missionary to establish a mission station beyond the borders of the Cape Colony.
