Two autograph letters signed whilst Wallace was a war correspondent in South Africa. The first, dated 23rd. February 1900, Orange River (? not clear) and the second dated Rondebosch, May 22. 1901, both to a Mr. Runciman. In the first letter he apologises for someone (illegible) "acting the goat, for he has some good points", sends the recipient a cheque for 21 pounds including interest at 10% per annum and thanks him for his kindness. In the second letter he thanks Runciman for congratulating him on his wedding (to Ivy Maude Caldecott) and also for his friendship and appreciation "putting aside the sordid considerations that shape our careers, not the least of the good things that life holds, is the good opinion of good men".
