This lot comprises the following two Olive Schreiner first editions:
1. Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland. 1897. T. Fisher Unwin. In the original green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Top edge gilt and other edges uncut. With the notorious (and in my opinion not so scarce) hanging frontispiece. The cloth has slight wear and a few marks. Stickers have been removed (one partially) from both front endpapers. There is an ownership rubber stamp on the front free endpaper. Internally otherwise clean and unfoxed. What makes this copy interesting is the presence of two uncommon contemporary reviews (1897) tipped on to two preliminary blanks – one from the Bechuanaland News and one from the Oudtshoorn Courant.
2. Thoughts on South Africa. 1923. T. Fisher Unwin. In the original red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. The boards have some scarring (probably fishmothing) more marked on the upper board. There are two signatures on the front pastedown which also has some slight edge loss from fishmothing. The blank front free endpaper is missing. Internally otherwise very clean and unfoxed.
A respectable pair with an attractive reserve price.
