These spectra were crucial in proving that our universe is expanding. The discovery that our universe expanded from a big bang ranks as one of the greatest discoveries of all time. Offered here are two “Rosetta stones” (or spectra) secured by Edwin Hubble (of Hubble Space Telescope fame) proving that the further a galaxy is away from the earth, the faster it moves away from us. Each spectrum is an original, printed on silver gelatin paper and mounted on cardboard. The handwriting of Edwin Hubble giving details of each spectrum appears on the cardboard, and is written in pencil. It appears that no such spectra have ever been offered to the public on auction before.
