1.) Menu for Union-Castle Line ship "Stirling Castle" dated October 1959.
The front panel depicts a Pipe Smoker from Basutoland, illustrated by Barbara Tyrrell, who would later become famous for her finely illustrated books on the tribal peoples of South Africa. Advertisement for a "Fancy Dress Dance" on the inside of the front panel and Ship's Menu on the facing panel. Very good condition.
2.) An additional "Stirling Castle" menu with added abstract of the log/itinerary on the inside of the front panel. The was the ship's 129th voyage. She sailed from Southampton on Sept. 24, 1959, and arrived at Cape Town on Thursday 8th October. Image of the Stirling Castle on front panel. Four signatures on rear blank panel. Very good condition.
3.) Farrell Lines advertisement on large card.
Initially known as American South African Lines, the shipping company was both a passenger and cargo line directly linking New York City with all the major ports along the Southern African coast. In 1965, with jet-powered flight monopolising passenger travel, the company ceased offering passenger services and transitioned to containerised cargo handling. Very good condition.
