Greenwall: 'Artists & Illustrators of the Anglo-Boer War', Pages 61-62, 'On 11 November 1899 George Newnes's 'Under the Union Jack' appeared. Newnes produced many other publications with a Boer War theme but 'Under the Union Jack' was the only one with original artist-drawn illustrations (together with numerous photographs). Original wash drawings came from Ernest Smythe, John Jellicoe (J.J.), R. Savage, Frank Brindly and John Hassall. Towards the end of the run of 'Under the Union Jack' (which ceased publication on 14 July 1900) original drawings were in short supply and previously published pictures by T.S. Crowther and Frank Stewart were used.' After issue number 36 'Under the Union Jack' added 'The Empire Illustrated' to its name and ran for some while carrying news of general interest about the empire.
