Louis Auguste Alphonse de Launay (July 19, 1860 - June 30, 1938), was a french geologist and speleologist, specialist of mineral deposits, writer, biographer and poet. In 1895, the French Bank of South Africa hired him as a consulting engineer, in full stock speculation on the gold deposit of South Africa. Next year he published a comprehensive book "The Gold Mines of the Transvaal" (1896), followed by another on the diamond mines (The Diamonds of Cape Town, 1897);
