From the Introduction to the Centenary Collection Catalogue:

"This art exhibition .... is intended to commemorate the Centenary of the Women's Memorial which was erected in Bloemfontein in 1893. The raison d'etre behind the Women's Memorial was to pay tribute to the mortality of the almost 28 000 Boer women and children who died in the British concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. Between 24 and 28 000 black civilians also died in these camps.

"Emily Hobhouse in her speech had this to say about the Women's Memorial at its unveiling in 1913:

We claim it as a World Monument, of which all the World's Woemn should be proud; for your dead by their brave simplicity have spoken to Universal Womanhood, and henceforth they are "woven into the stuff" of every woman's life".
