True first edition with "Despatches" in embossed gilt on the front board and "Dispatches" on the title page. 327pp.

Solid binding with clean pages, some light markings on the end papers and paste downs. Bookplate of well-known Africana collector James Hamilton Russell. This is the first work of prose by the author who, in his later years, became a Hollywood scriptwriter and wrote the screenplay for King Kong, his last book.

Thirty-five dispatches and six commentaries on the Boer War in South Africa which the author succeeded in mailing back to the U.K. uncensored, whilst acting as a correspondent for the Daily Mail. The letters contain many lively and humorous sketches of the war.
